U2 3D

U2 3D is billed as the first concert film in 3D. The film gives you an extraordinary view and experience of the U2 Vertigo Tour. Filmed in Beunos Aries, Argentina at an enormous soccer stadium, the film gives unprecedented angles and shots of the show.

This was my first IMAX movie. The IMAX screen is huge, over twice as long and wide as a normal movie screen.

The film itself is a standard concert film. It shows U2 doing that they do best, performing on a grand scale for thousands of fans. Everyone is in top form and the band sounds great. Speaking of sound, the mix was outstanding. In fact, every single scene was mixed in perspective to whoever was in the shot. So if Bono was on the right side of the screen, his voice would follow him from the right as he moved to the left. Still that did not affect the overall mix. Everything stayed in place and sat perfectly in the mix.

The 3D aspect of the film is what gives the film its unique look. We are given glimpses into U2′s show that we’ve never gotten before. The shots of Larry Mullen, Jr.’s drumset are the best and most interesting. The angles of his cymbals and toms as he plays create visually stunning shots. The overhead views as Mullen plays are stellar.

Shots of The Edge playing guitar and singing are equally interesting. It shows how much he does, how many things he is doing at one time. They all make it look so easy.

This particular performance is a great one. It is better than U2 Vertigo 2005 DVD and U2 Go Home. A lot of that has to do with the crowd, there are at least 60,000 people in that stadium and they’re all going crazy.

This film is the closest I’ve ever felt to actually being at a rock show. The film spends a good bit of time showing the crowd and their reactions. You get a real sense of the community and experience that a U2 show delivers. If you’re a U2 fan then I highly recommend the film. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

You can even see the freckles on the edge’s arms! Watching this makes me REALLY want to go to a football game in another country. So much energy! The crowd responded the same way they do at a football match. And the separation on the vocals was insane. A few times I thought Bono was sitting next to me singing, but it was just Kevin. LOL SO check this out that stadium holds 65,645 people for a football match. And at the show they had 2/3 field covered in standing room only. That’s over a football field full! So it had to be over 70,000 peeps! Man! The rush to have that many people jumping up and down singing your songs in harmony!

Also towards the end I kept thinking of all the shows I wish I could see that way, I wish they had a 3D Imax version of the Sigur Ros show we saw at the Tabernacle or Pink Floyd the Wall or maybe Madonna ;-) … she would be giving us all gigantic 3D lap dances! Dream come true! They should also make a 3d Imax of Beatles Yellow Submarine.

I got burned out on U2 years ago, but they still put out quality records unlike my other fav high school band REM.
That U2 show we saw at the GA dome in 92 was good even though we were 2 rows from the top of the dome.
